Flowers are like friends.......look after them well.

Welcome to Fairytale Flowers first blog post!

So, you have received your beautiful flowers and want to know how to really take care of them for longevity. Not a silly question, it’s one we get asked quite frequently actually.

We have taken time and care to provide you with the freshest blooms but looking after them correctly so that you get the best from them is your job. The way you do this differs depending on how your flowers were arranged and this is what I am here to let you know.

BOUQUETS (CUT FLOWERS)

Start off with a Clean Vase

Clean your vase thoroughly to clean the bacteria from the glass. Bacteria will kill your flowers.

CUT

Once you have unwrapped your bouquet make sure you re cut the stems before placing them in the vase. Cut at least 2cm off stems at an angle.

WATER

Most flowers begin start to wilt early because they do not get enough water to remain hydrated.

Make sure your water is always clean. To do this you may have to remove the flowers and clean it before you refill with new clean water.

Any leaves that are below the water line should be removed to prevent bacteria forming in the vase.

Re cut stems after 4 days.

There is a lot of advice on the internet regarding additives for flowers. All tried and tested. Some proven to work and some not to work.

You can try these suggestions that have been found on an Australian flower care website.

Lemon-lime soda is a good additive. Using one-part soda with three parts water will render a solution that balances sugars and acids to keep the flowers healthy for longer. Don’t use diet sodas, as they don’t have the sugar you want in the solution. Also avoid colas, as these sodas tend to have too much acid. If you want to keep the solution clear, add a very light bleach component. The bleach should only be about 1.25ml per litre.

If you want a more “from-scratch” solution for your flowers, add the following to a litre of warm water: 30ml lemon juice, 15 ml sugar, and 1.25ml bleach. With this solution, you will want to add another 1ml of bleach every 4 days.

You should take note to avoid using aspirin or vinegar in your vase solutions, as they are not generally effective for increasing the vase-life of flowers.

Treat them like friends

Flowers will die faster in a heated room. Make sure your flowers are not near a heater or air conditioner.

ARRANGEMENTS (IN FLORAL FOAM)

Water your arrangement every day, they will love you for it! Remember they are your friends.

Do not let the floral foam dry out. Once it has dried out, it will not absorb water again and your flowers will not have the expected life span that they should. If the stems dry out it will stop water from being absorbed.

Again, try to keep your arrangement in a cooler part of the house and avoid excessive heat.
